Olara Otunnu is a Ugandan politician and former United Nations official who has recently announced his candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the UN. He previously served as the UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict from 1997 to 2005, during Kofi Annan's tenure. Otunnu has also worked as Uganda's envoy to the UN and briefly held the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs. In addition to his diplomatic career, he was a presidential candidate for the opposition party in Uganda's 2011 elections, where he lost to long-serving President Yoweri Museveni.
