Simon ben Mattathias
Simon ben Mattathias, commonly referred to as Simon the Hasmonean, was the youngest son of Mattathias and brother of Judah and Jonathan Maccabee. Following the death of his brothers, Simon took leadership of the Jewish revolt against the Seleucid Empire and is known for successfully consolidating Jewish independence, establishing the Hasmonean dynasty, and serving as both high priest and ruler.
