She is the first woman to hold the presidency in Tanzania and has previously served as Vice President and Minister of State in the Vice President's Office. Recently, she co-hosted a summit in Dar es Salaam addressing the escalating situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and calling for immediate peace negotiations.
