Yakov Balglei

artist unknown

Yakov Balglei was a Belarusian painter born in 1891 in Brest, who became a notable figure in the Paris School of art. After studying medicine in Saint Petersburg and attending the Grekov Odessa Art School, he moved to Paris in 1911, where he focused on architecture and philosophy. Balglei's works, especially his engravings, gained acclaim for their quality, yet he remained relatively unknown in Belarus due to the tumultuous events of the 20th century that overshadowed his legacy. He passed away at the young age of 43, leaving behind a collection of art scattered across the globe. His recent rediscovery and the acquisition of his painting 'Portrait of a Woman' signify an important return of his legacy to Belarusian culture.
