Víctor Alvarizaes
Víctor Alvarizaes, the former mayor of Santa Catarina Pinula, was recently sentenced to 12 years in prison for embezzlement related to the misuse of public funds. He was found guilty of diverting Q145,438.62 from municipal resources in 2019 to finance a smear campaign against the current mayor, Sebastián Siero. Although initially acquitted in November 2024, a special appeal led to this new conviction in May 2024. In addition to his prison sentence, Alvarizaes must pay a fine of Q50,000 and faces political disenfranchisement for the duration of his sentence.
