Sergei Vavilov
Sergei Ivanovich Vavilov (1891–1951) was a prominent Soviet physicist known for founding the scientific school of physical optics in the USSR. He developed the theory of luminescence and was instrumental in the technology for producing fluorescent lamps. Vavilov discovered Cherenkov-Vavilov radiation alongside Pavel Cherenkov. He served as the president of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1945 until his death and played a significant role in promoting scientific knowledge as the first chairman of the 'Knowledge' Society and as the chief editor of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia. In 1950, he was honored as an academician of the Belarusian Academy of Sciences.
