Roger Eugene Maris
Roger Maris was an American professional baseball outfielder, born on September 10, 1934, in Hibbing, Minnesota. He is best known for breaking Babe Ruth's long-standing single-season home run record by hitting 61 home runs in 1961 while playing for the New York Yankees. Maris's achievement was significant not only for the numbers but also for the immense pressure he faced from the media and fans during the pursuit of the record. Despite his accomplishments, including being named the American League MVP twice, Maris struggled with public perception and was never inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He retired in 1968 and passed away on February 14, 1985, at the age of 51 due to cancer.
