Michael William O’Reilly was a notable figure in Irish history, best known for his role during the 1916 Easter Rising. As a captain, he led a group of men to the roof of the General Post Office to combat a fire and later facilitated the evacuation of the wounded. In a critical moment, surrounded by British forces, O’Reilly famously signaled a truce by waving a white linen handkerchief, a gesture that has since become a symbol of surrender and negotiation in the conflict.
