Maria Felipa
Maria Felipa, a natural leader from Ilha de Itaparica, symbolized resistance during the struggle for Brazil's independence from Portuguese rule. Leading a group of approximately 40 women and Indigenous allies, she was instrumental in burning Portuguese ships and fighting against colonial forces. Her image has been reconstructed in recent efforts to recover the identities of significant Black historical figures.
