After facing persecution from the Nicaraguan government due to his commitment to independent journalism, he fled to the United States in 2018. Galeano's work has been significant in highlighting social and political issues in Nicaragua, particularly during the protests that erupted in 2018. His nationality was revoked by the Nicaraguan regime in 2023, along with that of several other journalists. Currently, he is seeking political asylum in the United States, a process that began in 2019. Recently, he was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Florida, and a hearing regarding his immigration status is scheduled for October 2, 2023.
