Loreen Willenberg was a 71-year-old landscape designer from Sacramento, California, who gained recognition among HIV researchers as an extraordinary case of an elite controller. After testing positive for HIV in 1992, Willenberg's immune system managed to keep the virus in a latent state, allowing her to live a normal life without medication for decades. Despite being diagnosed with stage IV cancer in 2022, which required treatments that typically reactivate latent HIV, Willenberg's cells showed no detectable traces of the virus. Her remarkable resilience led scientists to believe she had potentially eradicated HIV entirely.
