Joseph Smith Jr.
Joseph Smith Jr. (1805–1844) was an American religious leader and founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, also known as Mormonism. He claimed to have had a series of divine visions, beginning with the First Vision in 1820, where he stated he saw God and Jesus Christ. In 1827, he reported discovering golden plates, which he translated into the Book of Mormon, published in 1830. Smith organized the Church of Christ, which later became known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, amidst significant persecution and controversy. His leadership saw the establishment of communities of followers, but also led to conflicts, resulting in his imprisonment and eventual assassination by a mob in 1844, making him a controversial and pivotal figure in American religious history.
