Gregori XIII, born Ugo Boncompagni in 1502, was Pope from 1572 until his death in 1585. He is best known for commissioning the Gregorian calendar, which reformed the Julian calendar and is the calendar used today. His papacy was marked by efforts to combat the Protestant Reformation and to strengthen Catholic education and missionary work. He also focused on the arts and sciences, patronizing various artists and intellectuals of his time.
