Giovanni Martini, known as John Martin, was an Italian-born soldier who fought in the American Civil War and later served in the U.S. Cavalry during the infamous Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. Born in 1852 in Sala Consilina, Italy, Martini joined the ranks of Giuseppe Garibaldi's volunteers before emigrating to America. He is notable for being the only survivor among his unit during the battle, which became one of the most significant events in the history of Native American resistance against U.S. expansion.
