Fang Zhiyuan was a prominent Chinese agricultural scientist and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, renowned for his pioneering work in the breeding of cabbage (Brassica oleracea). Born in 1939 in Hengyang, Hunan, he dedicated his life to improving vegetable varieties in China, particularly after witnessing the struggles of farmers during a cabbage crisis in the 1960s. He led the development of several key hybrid cabbage varieties, significantly reducing China's reliance on imported seeds and enhancing food security. His efforts not only boosted agricultural production but also ensured that farmers could prosper economically. Fang's commitment to agricultural innovation and education earned him widespread respect and recognition, and he continued to work closely with farmers until his passing in January 2023.
