Else Marie Bukdahl was a prominent Danish art historian and rector of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1985 to 2005, where she significantly influenced the education of generations of artists, including Olafur Eliasson and Tal R. Born in Brørup in 1934, she was the daughter of poet and author Jørgen Bukdahl and art historian Magnhild Ødvin Bukdahl. Bukdahl earned her dr.phil. degree with a thesis on the French philosopher Denis Diderot and was known for her interest in the relationship between Christianity and art. A respected figure in academia, she received the N.L. Høyen Medal for her contributions to research and interpretation in art history. Bukdahl passed away at the age of 89.
